What is a cryptogram?

A cryptogram is a short puzzle where every letter in a quote has been replaced by a different letter using a single consistent substitution cipher. Solving it means working backwards to reveal the original message using logic and letter-frequency analysis.

Is this cryptogram maker free?

What languages are supported?

The tool works with any Latin-alphabet language including English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Indonesian. Accented characters (é, ü, ñ, etc.) are stripped automatically so the cipher stays A–Z only. CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) are not supported and will be removed.

Can I print it for my classroom?

Yes. Click the PDF button and choose Puzzle Only (one copy for each student) or With Answer Key (the teacher's edition). Puzzles are formatted for A4 or US Letter paper by default, but you can switch to A5, A3, Legal, Tabloid, or other sizes in the settings panel.

What is the difference between the three difficulty levels?

Easy pre-reveals the three most frequent cipher letters in your quote and displays a letter-frequency bar chart. Medium hides pre-revealed letters but keeps the frequency chart. Hard removes all hints — solvers must rely purely on pattern recognition and frequency intuition.

How do I share a cryptogram with friends or students?

Click the Share button to generate a unique URL. Anyone you send it to can open it in any browser and solve the puzzle interactively online. They do not need to sign up or install anything.

Can the same letter ever map to itself?

No. The substitution cipher guarantees that no letter encrypts to itself (this property is called avoiding fixed points). Every A in the cipher is a different letter in the original quote — making the puzzle fair and solvable.

What is the maximum quote length?

Quotes up to about 300 letters fit cleanly on a single printed page (A4 or Letter). Longer quotes work in the interactive solver but may wrap awkwardly in the PDF. For best print results, aim for 50–250 letters.

How do letter hints work?

In the sidebar under Reveal Letters, you can tap any cipher letter to pre-reveal it in the puzzle. On Easy difficulty, the three most common letters are already selected for you. You can add or remove hints at any time before downloading or sharing.

What does the frequency table show and why is it useful?

The frequency table lists every cipher letter alongside a bar showing how often it appears. Because letter frequency in natural language is predictable (E, T, A are most common in English), solvers can match high-frequency cipher letters to common plaintext letters — a classic cryptanalysis technique.

Can I change the difficulty after generating a puzzle?

Yes. Open the Settings tab in the sidebar, change the difficulty, and the puzzle updates immediately. The share link and PDF will reflect the new settings when you regenerate them.

Why is cryptogram solving good for kids and seniors?

Cryptograms exercise pattern recognition, vocabulary recall, and logical deduction simultaneously. For children, they reinforce spelling and reading comprehension in a game format.
