What is Nonogram?

Nonogram, also known as Picross, Griddlers, Paint by Numbers, or Hanjie, is a picture logic puzzle where you reveal a hidden image by filling in cells based on number clues. Each number indicates consecutive filled cells in that row or column. Created by Non Ishida in Japan (1987), the puzzle gained global popularity through Nintendo's Picross series. Unlike Sudoku, nonograms reward visual and spatial reasoning, making them excellent tools for developing pattern recognition and logical deduction skills in both children and adults.

Nonogram Solving Tips

Start with Completed Rows/Columns

Look for clues that fill the entire row or column (e.g., '10' in a 10-cell row). These are guaranteed to be correct and provide anchor points for solving adjacent cells.

Use Cross-Checking

Solve rows first, then check columns (or vice versa). Where a solved row intersects with column clues, you can mark empty cells as definite blanks using X marks.

Look for Edge Overlaps

If a clue is more than half the row/column length, you can deduce some middle cells must be filled. For example, '7' in a 10-cell row guarantees cells 4-7 are filled regardless of alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our nonogram puzzle maker

Creating a nonogram is simple! Choose your grid size (10ร—10 to 30ร—30), then either: 1) Click cells to hand-draw your pattern, or 2) Upload an image file (JPG/PNG) to automatically convert it. Our generator creates the row and column number clues automatically. Click 'Download PDF' to export your puzzle with optional answer key.
A nonogram (also called Picross, Griddlers, or Hanjie) is a logic puzzle where you fill in grid cells to reveal a hidden picture. Each row and column has number clues showing how many consecutive cells should be filled. For example, '3 2' means three filled cells, then a gap, then two more filled cells. By cross-referencing row and column clues, you logically deduce which cells to fill.

Absolutely! Click 'Upload Image' and select any JPG or PNG file from your computer. Our image-to-nonogram converter automatically transforms it into a puzzle. Adjust the threshold slider to control which pixels become filled cells - higher thresholds create harder puzzles with fewer filled cells. Works great for logos, photos, and pixel art!
You can create nonogram puzzles from 10ร—10 (easy) up to 30ร—30 (challenging) grid sizes. Larger grids allow more detailed images but take longer to solve. For beginners and kids, we recommend 10ร—10 or 15ร—15 grids. For experienced players, try 25ร—25 or 30ร—30 for intricate designs.
Yes! When downloading your PDF, you can choose to include the answer key (solved puzzle) on a separate page. This is perfect for teachers who need to verify student work, or for personal use when you get stuck. The answer key shows the completed grid with all cells filled in correctly.
We support A4 (210ร—297mm) and Letter (8.5ร—11 inches) paper sizes. The PDF generator automatically scales your nonogram puzzle to fit the selected paper size with clear number clues and grid lines for easy printing and solving.
Start by finding rows or columns where the numbers add up to nearly the full length - these often have forced cells you can fill immediately. Use logic to cross-reference row and column clues: if a row clue says '5' and you've already filled 3 cells in that row, there must be 2 more consecutive filled cells. Mark definite empty cells with X to help visualize. Work systematically and avoid guessing!
Yes! You're free to use generated nonogram puzzles for educational purposes, classroom worksheets, printed puzzle books, or personal projects. We only ask that you don't redistribute or resell the generator software itself. Teachers, homeschool parents, and puzzle book creators are welcome to use our tool.
They're different names for the same puzzle type! 'Nonogram' is the original Japanese name, 'Picross' comes from Nintendo's popular game series (Picture Crossword), and 'Griddlers' is a trademarked name used by some publishers. Other names include Hanjie, Paint by Numbers, and Pic-a-Pix. All refer to the same picture logic puzzle with numbered row and column clues.
