Making a crossword puzzle by hand means drawing a grid, fitting words together letter by letter, and redrawing everything when one word doesn't fit. This guide skips all of that. You bring two things — a list of words and a clue for each one — and the grid assembles itself.
Follow these steps in order. Each one takes under a minute.
Stick to a single topic — animals, a book chapter, a vocabulary unit. Words from one theme share more letters, which means the grid locks together tighter and looks better. Aim for 8 to 15 words; more than 20 makes the grid sprawl.
Words 4–8 letters long with common vowels (A, E, I, O) intersect most easily. A few long words are fine as anchors, but a list made entirely of 12-letter words leaves big empty gaps in the grid.
Type each entry as WORD, clue — one per line. A good clue defines the word without containing it: "Largest planet in our solar system" works, "The planet Jupiter" does not. For younger solvers, fill-in-the-blank clues are the gentlest starting point.
The generator tests thousands of arrangements and keeps the one with the most intersections. You don't place anything by hand. If a word can't connect to any other, it gets flagged so you can swap it out.
Easy keeps the grid compact with more crossings, so every letter you fill in gives you a head start on the words that cross it. Hard spreads words out with fewer intersections, meaning each one has to be worked out more independently. Change it any time and the grid rebuilds instantly.

"A young dog" is a clue for PUPPY. "A puppy is a young dog" gives it away. Read each clue back and check the answer word isn't hiding in it.
For a class, use the exact wording from the lesson so the puzzle doubles as review. For a party, keep clues playful. The same word list can serve both — only the clues change.
Long clues get squeezed on the printed page and are harder to scan. If a clue runs past about ten words, cut it down or pick a simpler word.
Mix definitions, fill-in-the-blanks, and examples. A page of identical-sounding clues feels like a vocabulary test; variety keeps people going.
RHYTHM, LYNX and CRYPT barely intersect with anything. If several words come back unplaced, the list is fighting itself — swap in some vowel-rich alternatives.
Forty words don't make a puzzle four times better, just four times more sprawling. Two puzzles of fifteen words each beat one of thirty.
"A color" fits dozens of words. Add a detail that narrows it to exactly one: "Color of a ripe banana".
If someone else is running the activity, they need the solutions. The PDF includes them on their own page — keep it, just print it separately.
